College Soccer Rewind: UConn tops Georgetown; High Point no longer perfect; and more | Soccer By Ives

If showing that they were worthy of being considered one of the best teams in the nation was the goal for the Georgetown Hoyas on Wednesday afternoon, they managed to accomplish that with an impressive showing against the top team in the nation.

Unfortunately for the Hoyas, UConn and goalkeeper Andre Blake also showed us why they are worthy of being called the best team in college soccer.

UConn capitalized on some Georgetown blunders, and rode a standout seven-save effort from Blake, to post a 2-1 victory against the Hoyas, ranked No. 3 in the SBI Top 25.

The No. 1 Huskies came out flat in the first half and looked poised for their first loss of the season, but Georgetown couldnt figure out a way to get a shot past Blake, widely regarded as the best goalkeeper in the nation. Blake made six of his seven saves in the first half.

Mamadou Diouf opened the scoring with a 39th-minute free kick that appeared to catch Georgetown by surprise. Allando Matheson headed home a Flo Liuat cross in the 64th minute to make it 2-0 UConn, but the Hoyas responded just two minutes later when Andy Riemer slotted one past Blake.

In other Wednesday action, No. 20 High Point saw their perfect record tarnished in a scoreless draw against VMI, Bradley posted a 3-1 upset of No. 19 Northwestern and No. 23 SMU edged No. 25 Tulsa, 1-0, in the days other clash of ranked teams.

Here is a full rundown of Wednesdays top college soccer matches:

Red Bulls set sights on McAllister as Backe replacement | Soccer By Ives

The New York Red Bulls are in the middle of a playoff race, and could still conceivably win an MLS Cup title, but that isnt stopping the people now running the Red Bulls from making plans for major off-season changes.

After disposing of former general manager and sporting director Erik Soler earlier this week, the Red Bulls are already lining up a replacement for head coach Hans Backe, and while several names have already surfaced as alleged targets, sources tell SBI that one coach has emerged as a front-runner to lead the Red Bulls in 2013.

That man is Gary McAllister.

The 47-year-old former Scotland international is a close confidant of Gerard Houllier, the man now running the soccer side of things for the Red Bulls (and Red Bulls global soccer operations) and sources with knowledge of the clubs strategy tell SBI that Houllier is strongly considering bringing in McAllister as the teams new head coach once the 2012 season ends.

McAllister spent two seasons playing at Liverpool under Houllier, and the two forged a friendship that eventually led to McAllister serving as Houlliers assistant manager during Houlliers stint with Aston Villa during the 2010-2011 season.A former manager at Coventry City and Leeds, McAllister temporarily took over as Villa manager late in the 2010/2011 season when Houllier became ill, but left the club when Alex McLeish was hired as Aston Villas new manager in the summer of 2011. That was McAllisters last coaching job.

Backe is wrapping up his third season as Red Bulls head coach, the longest stint he has spent at one job since a four-year run as head coach of FC Copenhagen from 2001 to 2005. The departure of Soler, and Houlliers takeover of soccer operations should seal Backes fate, though there is the possibility that he keeps his job if he leads the Red Bulls to a championship.

Barring a title run, Backes days with the Red Bulls look numbered and it looks as though the Red Bulls will be turning to another European coach to take the reins.

What do you think of this development? Like the idea of McAllister being the new Red Bulls coach? Worried about another coach with no MLS experience taking over in New York?

Polls soon to open in Seattle as Hanauer/GM vote looms | Soccer By Ives

By JOSE M. ROMERO

Seattle Sounders Alliance members are just a few days away from putting democracy in sport into action when voting opens whether to retain general manager Adrian Hanauer.

Yes, Sounders fans have major stake in the fate of Hanauer, who is less focused on stumping for fan support than on seeing the team earn a higher seed in the MLS playoffs. Beginning Sunday through early December, eligible voters will decide if Hanauer, a minority owner who was named the clubs first GM before it became an MLS franchise, will stay or go.

Its a unique situation and something just not seen in American sports. Even the New York Times is paying attention.

Hanauer should to be in a favorable position to keep his job. The Sounders will make their fourth consecutive playoff appearance in four seasons of existence and the team is a huge hit in Seattle and one of the model franchises of MLS. The team has won three U.S. Open Cups and have shattered attendance records. Hanauer has also made some shrewd player moves, including a couple that didnt go over so well with the fans.

Letting go of young fan favorites Lamar Neagle and Mike Fucito irked plenty of Sounders faithful, but the play and producion of Eddie Johnson, who was brought in to bolster the attack, has atoned for that move in at least some fans minds.

On the flip side, Seattle has never advanced out of the conference semifinals. Some may view the teams inability to win a playoff series a reflection of Hanauer and ther front office.

How do you think the vote will play out? Is GM still in the cards for the poker-playing Hanauer, or not?

Galaxy face RSL to kick off tough stretch run | Soccer By Ives

BY KAYLA KNAPP

CARSON, Calif. — The first time the Los Angeles Galaxy faced Real Salt Lake this year was in the 2012 season opener, where they were handed a tough 3-1 loss at the Home Depot Center. Not exactly the way the reigning MLS Cup Champions were hoping to start the defense of their title.

When a struggling Galaxy faced Salt Lake again in June, it was a far different outcome. They came back from down two goals to win at Rio Tinto Stadium to win 3-2, and kick start their surge of the Western Conference table.

“[We] beat Salt Lake, and came back and started really going on a tear,” Galaxy captain Landon Donovan said of the win at RSL in June. “I think it gave us some belief to go there and get a result like that after being down 2-0. It’s a big feat, and what really helps is if we play them in the playoffs, we have the belief that we can go there and do that again so that’s good.”

“We’ve set ourselves up well. We’ve got to finish it off now,” defender Todd Dunivant said after training on Thursday. “Three months ago you wouldn’t have thought, a lot of people didn’t think we could be in this position, but we always believed and we knew we had a good team and we stuck together. And the club has stuck by us, and I think we’ve rewarded that faith with some good results.”

Now, the Galaxy welcome RSL back to the Home Depot Center for their final clash of the regular season in a match that will be likely be a preview of what we can expect to see when the playoffs begin next month. The teams sit second and third in the Western Conference, with Salt Lake just two points ahead of Los Angeles.

“They’re a good team all-around,” Dunivant said. “Over the years they’ve been very good defensively, and part of that is the way they keep the ball and limiting your chances, and their midfield is the key to that.”

“They don’t change much,” head coach Bruce Arena said of Salt Lake. “They are who they are, they’ve pretty much had this group of players for a number of years – they’re not a team you have to do a whole lot of scouting on. You pretty much know their lineup, their characteristics of the players and their style.”

While RSL may have stayed consistent through the last few years, it doesn’t make the challenge any less difficult – especially since the Galaxy will have to face them without center back AJ DeLaGarza, who is out for at least the remainder of the regular season with a left knee sprain.

“We haven’t had this where AJ’s been out, he’s been real reliable for us and has been in there so we’ve been working this week in practice on getting that right,” Dunivant said. “Certainly it’s not going to be easy without him, he’s a huge part of our defense and a key cog in that four. We’re going to have to not use it as an excuse and really just plow forward.”

“[AJ] and Omar have a pretty special partnership, as good as any in the league, in the way they understand each other,” Donovan said. “And now Omar’s going to have to pull some of these other guys along with him. How much it affects us, we’ll see. We’re confident that we have a number of good defenders that can step in.”

While DeLaGarza aims to be back for the playoffs, the Galaxy will have to face some of their toughest opponents – Salt Lake, San Jose Earthquakes and Seattle Sounders – without him.

STRETCH RUN A TOUGH TEST

The final games of the regular season will determine where the Galaxy land in the final standings, and while the Earthquakes are impossible to catch, second place in the West is very much a possibility.

“We’ve only got three games left and they’re against three teams that we’re battling for playoff position for, we can’t ask for anything more than that really,” Dunvant said. “Certainly not easy, but you’d have it no other way – that’s the way we made up ground this season was beating Western Conference teams, climbing the table quickly that way and now we have a chance again to play teams that are right there with us for the second, third and fourth spot and that’s going to be important.”

This stretch will not only determine playoff positioning, but is a solid test of how the Galaxy will stack up against some of the top teams in the league heading into the post-season.

“If you look at teams we’re playing, they’re some of the teams that we could get, so it’s going to be three tough games, we know that, they’re good teams,” Robbie Keane said after Thursday’s training session. “We’ll get these out of the way and refocus on the playoffs, but we obviously want to finish as high as we can. From now until hopefully the final, there’s not going to be too many easy games.”

WILHELMSSON OPTIMISTIC FOR SATURDAY

The newest addition to the Galaxy roster, Swedish international Christian Wilhelmsson, had his first full training session since picking up an injury to his left calf in training last week. The winger said he’ll be available for Saturday’s match, but was also cautious about his return.

“Every time you’re injured or something , you just want to get back as soon as possible but you cannot rush it, you cannot hurry because you get maybe injured again,” Wilhelmsson said. “You have to take care; the body tells you how fast you can do it.”

Americans Abroad: Midweek Rewind | Soccer By Ives

By FRANCO PANIZO

The majority of the Americans Abroad contingent that were in action during the middle of the weekare surely looking forward to this weekends action after mostly poor outings, but Steve Cherundolo is not one of those players.

Cherundo had arguably the most success from an individual and team standpoint during the midweek action, going the distance in Hannover 96s 2-1 comeback win over Levante in the Europa League on Thursday. The victory pushed Hannover into first place of Group L after two games, and should give the club some momentum heading into their weekend fixture.

Josh Gatt did not have as much of an impact in helping Molde FKs Europa League victory, but he did make a cameo appearance off the bench to make his first appearance for the club since suffering a hamstring injury early last month. Gatt came off the bench and played the final nine minutes of Moldes 2-0 triumph against VfB Stuttgart, a result that gave the Norwegian side its first points and the second place spot in Group E after two games.

Another youngster who saw time on the field was Hector Joya. The U.S. Under-20 mens national team midfielder received his first start as a professional in Santos Lagunas 2-1 victory over Atlas, adding the latest milestone to what have been a memorable few weeks for the 19-year-old Joya.

U.S. U-17 star Flores signs with Dortmund | Soccer By Ives

U.S. Under-17 mens national team attacking midfielder Junior Flores is one of the top prospects in the American pipeline, and German Bundesliga champions Borussia Dortmund are convinced he could be one for the future.

Dortmund has signed the 16-year-old Flores to a professional contract, the Orlando Sentinels Paul Tenorio reported on Twitter on Thursday evening. The professional portion of the contractwill take effect in March of 2014, when he turns 18 (by FIFA rule, players cant sign binding professional contracts outside of their home nation until they turn 18).

Flores signed a four-year deal with the club and he is expected to train with Dortmund periodically between now and until he turns 18. According to the Washington Post, Flores also signed a two-year deal with Nike, which kicks in immediately.

Flores had a breakout showing with the U.S. Under-17 team last winter and that drew reported interest from clubs across the globe, including Paris Saint-Germain and Liverpool.Flores had also received interest from MLS, but what it offered was substantially lower than what Dortmund was willing to give him.

Born in Los Angeles to Salvadoran parents, Flores is eligible to play for El Salvador or the United States at the international level but, to this point, he has committed to playing for the Americans.

What do you think about this move? Like the idea of another U.S. youth prospect developing in Germany? Disappointed MLS didnt sign him?

MLS Notes: Franco suspended, Davis sidelined, and more | Soccer By Ives

By FRANCO PANIZO

Welcome to MLS, Guillermo Franco.

The MLS Disciplinary Committee decided to suspend Franco one game and fine him an undisclosed amount for his reckless challenge on Philadelphia Union midfielder Brian Carroll in the second half of the Fires 3-1 loss on Wednesday, his second game in the league.Franco received a red card for the tackle and was already set to miss this Saturdays match against the New York Red Bulls, but he will now also miss the Oct. 20 match against the New England Revolution.

A late acquisition by Chicago, Franco is now in a tough spot in terms of his standing with the team. He will not return until the season finale and that might not give him enough time to convince head coach Frank Klopas he is ready for a bigger role in the playoffs.

Here are more notes from around the league:

DAVIS IN DOUBT FOR DUEL WITH IMPACT

The Houston Dynamo have a pivotal match against the Montreal Impact looming, and midfielder Brad Davis looks a good bet to miss out on it. Davis sustained a strained left calf on Tuesday and he admitted it might be difficult for him to play at BBVA Compass Stadium on Saturday when the Impact visit. Still, the injury is not considered to be a long-term one and there is a small chance Davis could dress to play against Montreal.

MORROW AGREES TO NEW DEAL WITH EARTHQUAKES

It appears Justin Morrow will be with the San Jose Earthquakes for the foreseeable future. Morrow signed a new contract with the Earthquakes on Thursday, but terms of the deal were not disclosed. Morrow has enjoyed a strong season for first-place San Jose, going the distance in 30 of 31 league games and playing in the MLS All-Stars 3-2 win over Chelsea this past summer.

MLS TEAMS HEADING BACK TO ORLANDO FOR PRESEASON

The MLS regular season may not be over just yet, but that is not stopping teams from already making their preseason plans for next year. For the fourth straight year,MLS teams will be making their way to Orlando for preseason preparationsas well as the annual Walt Disney World Pro Soccer Classic tournament at ESPN Wide World of Sports Complex. Six teams are reportedly set to train and partake in the Central Florida event in 2013, with D.C. United and Sporting Kansas City the first two teams identified.

What do you think of Francos suspension? How do you see Houston faring without Davis? Which other teams would you like to see in Orlando for preseason preparations?

NASL Notes: Downs stepping aside, Stars on verge of being ousted and more | Soccer By Ives

By FRANCO PANIZO

The 2012 season will be NASL Commissioner David Downs last.

Downs is set to leave his post with NASL at the end of the current campaign, the league announced Thursday. Downs has served as the leagues commissioner for its first two seasons, but he intends to retire and move from Miami back to the New York area once the NASL Championship Series concludes. Downs will reportedly assist the league in its transition to a new commissioner.

During his two years in charge, Downs has helped the league grow after trying times threatened to shut it down. As Downs told SBI earlier this year, attendance has gone up, even if only slightly, and the addition of the San Antonio Scorpions has been great in terms of filling the void left behind by the Montreal Impact.

Here are more notes from NASL:

MINNESOTA STARS PLACE IN JEOPARDY

The Minnesota Stars FC are still in the hunt to repeat as NASL champions, but even that will not guarantee them a spot in the league next year.

The Stars still are without an owner and the introduction of the New York Cosmos for the 2013 season is putting Minnesotas place in NASL in jeopardy. The league operated the Stars this season and last, but new ownership needs to be found by Oct. 27 in order for Minnesota to assure itself of a place in NASL in 2013. NASL Commissioner David Downs recently cited the lack of ownership, financial restrictions and poor attendance as the teams issues right now.

ROWDIES HILL NAMED COACH OF THE YEAR

The Tampa Bay Rowdies have enjoyed a successful campaign in 2012 and head coach Ricky Hill has played a big part in making that happen.

Having guided the Rowdies to a second-place finish in the regular season, Hill earned the inaugural NASL Coach of the Year award as voted by media across the nation. The Rowdies ended up just two points shy of first place in the standings and lost just twice in their final 17 matches.

Hill edged out regular season champion San Antonio Scorpions head coach Tim Hankinson for the honors.

What do you make of Downs departure? Worried about the Stars future? Think Hill was the right choice for Coach of the Year?
